NZ Herald interview with Dougal Watt, NZSKAIC co-chair, on the wider SKA benefits to NZ.
Australia & New Zealand to get 5.2 Tbps Link to States
Good news for the anzSKA bid to host the SKA arrived when Pacnet, Asia’s leading provider of telecommunication services, and Pacific Fibre Limited announced plans to jointly build the Pacific Fibre cable, a city-to-city, low-latency subsea fiber optic cable that will boost connectivity between Australia, New Zealand and the US. The total project cost of the new cable is estimated at US$400 million, and comprises of at least two fiber pairs with 64 wavelengths per fiber pair. By using the latest 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) per wavelength technology, the cable is expected to have a capacity of up to 5.12 terabits per second (Tbps), and will be further upgradeable to beyond 12 Tbps with future 100 Gbps per wavelength technology.

First Australasian VLBI observations using 1st ASKAP antenna
Observations made by a collection of telescopes across Australasia including the first Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) antenna have peered into the heart of the giant radio galaxy Centaurus A.
NZ Radio Telescope Connected to National Research Network
The Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand Ltd (REANNZ) and AUT University last week celebrated the successful connection of AUT’s radio telescope at Warkworth to the Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN), which is the first step to having the dish participate in real time observations with larger telescopes in Australia. The KAREN connection will allow the telescope to participate in the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) - a network of around eight Australian dishes already linked via high-speed connections which undertake regular, simultaneous observations in a process called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI).
