Radio Astronomy

Radio Astronomy Research is being undertaken by Dr Melanie Johnston-Hollitt, Dr Edwin Budding & Dr Christopher Hollitt and their students at the Victoria University of Wellington and also Dr Slava Kitaev at the Auckland University of Technology.

In addition to conducting their own research into radio astronomy, Melanie, Ed and Slava are members of large international teams conducting surveys on the SKA pathfinder telescope "ASKAP". Melanie is a member of the EMU and POSSUM survey teams and Ed and Slava are involved in VAST.

Melanie's research group is currently focusing on the role of environment in the evolution of radio emission in galaxy clusters. Melanie's interest in EMU is primarily follows the main thrust of her research group while her involvment in POSSUM is concerned with magnetic fields in clusters and radio relics. Key publications in refereed journals associated with radio observations of clusters include:

In addition to this Melanie has a long standing interest in other type of radio phenomena and in multi-wavelength observations of clusters which will be relevant to the ASKAP survey work. Full details of other publications are available via ADS.

Ed's research in radio astronomy over the last decade has concentrated on multi-wavelength observations of binary star systems. Ed's participation in VAST (PI Murphy) capitalises on this research. Key publications in refereed journals include:
